Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
Sundays 8/7c on ABC
Convergence Concepts helped the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition team provide a brand-new, fully accessible home for Carl Hall and his family in Wichita, Kansas. The project included a number of electronics throughout the home, including a number of door openers, whole-house lighting control and audio, an elevator, security system and cameras, climate control, a home theater and several televisions. However, Carl has a high spinal cord injury and needed a system to provide hands-free control of all of this technology. A MEDIAssistant Series 3 System was integrated to provide voice control throughout the entire home.
The MEDIAssistant system acts as the front end of a sophisticated control system. It uses a wireless microphone to let Carl issue voice commands anywhere in the home. The MEDIAssistant responds to the voice commands by sending control signals to a Crestron home entertainment system installed by Wichita-based Home Technology Systems. The Crestron system then controls the house’s electronics.
Systems like this are always customized for the user, and Carl’s was no different. Using voice commands he can easily move from room to room using the door openers, watch movies in the Theater with his kids, operate the lights throughout the house and use the elevator.
In addition to the house-wide controls, he also uses the system to run his office productivity software, check his email and surf the internet – all by voice with the help of a head tracking mouse.
